Mac App Store: Future of All Apple Distribution?
January 7, 2011
Apple’s inevitable translation of the iOS App Store to the Mac has been expected for a while, and now (ironically on the Christian holiday of Epiphany) has finally been revealed and released to the public. My personal experience has been all positive, save for the ability to find the apps I want, and I truly do think this is the way of the future for software distribution.
It was interesting to see how Apple released Aperture on the App Store for a staggeringly low price of 80 dollars. For professional photographers, but especially amateur photographers who want to be professional, this is a fantastic development, and it got me thinking about the rest of Apple’s pro lineup. Theoretically, when Apple releases the next radically improved Final Cut Studio in the next few months, might they consider releasing it (and logically Logic Studio as well) via the Mac App Store? The obvious answer is yes, but the even more obvious answer is no, for while Apple would love to take full advantage of their new distribution platform, the size of these applications are staggering, an impossibility over the average internet connection. However, it’s not the applications themselves that take up so much space, but rather the content, such as the soundtrack loops and motion content. Perhaps Apple will offer up the applications themselves on the Mac App Store for cheaper and begin selling most of the content separately? Or maybe they’ll just let the dozens of GB download over the course of several hours and simply indicated it before you agree to purchase? Or maybe, at least for the time being, they’ll leave it exactly as it is now?
What do you all think?

All Apps on the App Store are licensed for “non-commercial” use. I guess that most Final Cut Pro seats are used for commercial uses, therefore FCP on the App Store is a no-go.
I don’t care how there releasing it…as long it’s released…lol….don’t we all feel the same..hahaha
i liked this site better when you weren’t posting Mike.
hahaha…Blah2..you are funny…..but no I like when mike posts…
But let’s all hope final cut 64bit…and all the new great shit it is to have………COMES OUT…??….SOON!……if not cs5 is gonna look real good!
I really don’t care how… though I don’t prefer the app store, but I just want it to be released already… How long can they wait, gezus!
…..right wesley…you know it’s still only roomers that there will be a new 64bit fcs…I mean apple never said it’s coming out this year at all….and never never no talk about it about anywhere…..always iphone ipad ipod ios imydick isomething but never final cut pro talk!!!……so Iwonder
If it’s not coming any time soon, or it just sucks; me and my company are going Adobe, period.
you and me both……and you know…it better be 64bit….and be real fast…no more rendering…..better filters…..storyborad….better everything…..but Im betting it is not gonna…..if it does come out this year….it won’t have 64bit….just some bullshit……apple does not care about it anymore….that’s all there is to it!!!…..if they did..it would have been out here already…and they would have let adobe get this far……what do you all think???
….apple does not need fcp to sell computers anymore…they got ilife…..and imac…mac book pro…..mac book air…..you don’t even see the mac pro..at the apple store anymore…….10 pros…to 1.0000,0000,0000,….consumers…which one would you care about more……final cut is all about dead as we know it….RIP
oh…and one more thing….let’s not forget about ipod ipad iphone…almost all who buy one of …..u know…..will then get a mac…..not the pro….the imac or mac book pro……but i think more imacs now….and imovie…..even imovie is some what better then final cut pro…

when is the macsoda logo changing to tim cook?
I hope not for a long time……come on steve get will real soon….and come back! YOU ARE APPLE!!…..ps Tim Cook is great also…as is all apple’s teem.
Yikes. Are you guys reactionary much? Why does Apple talk about consumer products 1000 times more than FCP? Because the customer base is just that much bigger.
If you want a reasoned analysis for what to expect from a spring release of FCP, Phip Hodgetts has written several well-reasoned articles over the last few months. And in his most recent podcast, mentioned that there were VERY clear indications that Apple is closing in on a FCP release. That release may not have EVERYTHING that everybody wants- open format editing or 64bit, but those are purely for reasons that are tied to Quicktime and OSX, so don’t expect any movement on those fronts until Lion is released this summer.
Apple will not abandon proApps. Apple likes the cache that comes with the inclination that creative pros use Apple products, and I just can’t see them foregoing that.
….open format editing or 64bit,
NO!..I don’t think apple will come out with FCP, without at lest 64bit.in there next release….I know they are well aware that everyone wants 64bit…..to not come out with 64bit….would be very bad for them….and I think a lot of pro users would start looking at other pro app co. ADOBE…
Nevertheless, FCP becoming 64 bit without the underlying QT architecture doing so first seems highly improbable.
And the only people who will jump ship are those with closed production circles. If you’re a one man shop, you can decide to move to Premier Pro if you want, but if you work with a network of companies [like I do] and they’re all FCP based, it’s going to take a while for that kind of shift to happen.
NO!! I do not want to go to ADOBE…I love fcp…..but let’s get on with the upgrade already…..do you think this year??….talk to me…
Let’s not forget that on it’s current 2 year production cycle, FCS4 isn’t technically “behind schedule”, since FCS3 was released in July 2009.
since FCS3 was released in July 2009…..but was that a real upgrade??
BUT!.. I can do july….Lion will be released …it will all come together……I HOPE??
thank you for the info..
Yes. FCP3 was a “real” upgrade. Support for more ProRes codecs. Additional RED support. iChat timeline sharing. Depth of field and ray-trace refections in Motion. Improved speed controls.
Lion will be unveiled at WWDC, but won’t be released until probably August. Any FCP improvements that will come with Lion probably won’t see the light of day for a couple months after.
Best bet is UI and feature improvements for a release this Spring, and then 64bit and non-QT format editing in the Fall if they do it as a point enhancement.
If Apple can do better than that it will be a big shock. But until then I’m content to keep using FCP everyday and making money.
….your so right…what the hell do I want…it does everything I want it to do now….BUT…it would be nice with much faster renders or no render al all!!…and more support for blu-ray….don’t you think?
I say drop Steve Jobs and get the team back that know how to make real Apple Products, Mac Pro – Pro Apps (nope not Aperture) and a real OS!
AppStore exclusives so far :
Final Cut X
Motion
Compressor
XCode4
OSX10.7
Makes you think if this is what I bought a Mac for. I like to install software without internet, use the mac without internet.
I like to sell software which I have no use anymore for.
I like printed manuals, too.
