Next-Gen iPhone: What’s to Come

May 27, 2009

Picture 39iLounge reported yesterday that there will be three models of the next iPhone: 3G, 3.5G, and a China Version. We have just been told that this is accurate information, and we will hear about it at WWDC, along with Snow Leopard, Final Cut Studio 3, and Logic Studio 2. While I wasn’t given confirmation regarding the iPod Nano having a camera, due to the fact the info came from the same source, I have to believe it is real as well.

Let’s recap what the next gen iPhone(s) will have, according to our sources and others as well..

- 3.2 Megapixel camera on the back with the ability to shoot video.

- Up to 32 GB of storage.

- 3G on an overseas model, 3.5G on the US model, and a special model for China.

- Frontside camera for, presumably, video chat.

- Primitive Video Editing on the phone. Immediate export to Youtube, MobileMe.

- Ability to download movies, tv shows, and music videos directly to the phone.

- Cortex Processor

- Double the RAM

- Vastly improved camera software, including zoom, photo-editing, and photobooth effects (unconfirmed).

- Matte plastic enclosure, despite our dreams of aluminum (curse you plastic!)

-  Completely unconfirmed, but we’ve recently heard whispers regarding an OLED screen on the next iPhone. Take this one with a grain of salt.

Makes me wonder why they would split 3G and 3.5G, when the current iPhone 3G aleady supports HSDPA which sometimes is called 3.5G or Turbo 3G.

    but who knows…

  2. Some countries won’t support speeds up to 7.2 Mbps, therefore its smarter to have a different model. Not all models will be available in all countries, only one model per country.

    very interesting…..

I believe these rumors, except for one thing: How does this slightly different form factor fit into the pretty strong rumors (now I can’t remember where I heard them..) that the new iPhones would fit the same cases. I think the biggest hurdle to using existing cases will be the front facing camera, but I almost think Apple’s _got_ to include that by now. So much potential by just turning the stupid thing around!

  5. The camera is going to be extremely small on the front. Low resolution, but a high resolution won’t be necessary. That is, until 4G arrives…

I REALLY hope Apple puts in an OLED screen. It makes a world of difference!

Seeing that Steve Jobs was in the office a couple of days ago, I really have this feeling he’s gonna be a surprise appearance at WWDC. I REALLY think that is it!

  8. No OLED screen, no frontside camera, and as known now, the picture is very off, but matte black plastic is a yes.

OLED is probably not coming, I agree. Frontside camera should come… I’d be surprised if it didn’t, but at this point who knows. Matte black plastic is a yes.

Remember, there are three versions, a 3.5G, a 3G, and a China version. Maybe they will all boast different features besides speed?

  10. I do hope you’re right about the 3 different versions – I’d pay the premium for 3.5, because I know I’d use it. I still use my Edge iPhone daily, literally, and it never leaves my side.

The one contradiction I have against all the rumors is the Frontside camera, but we’ll all see shortly. It just seems like one of those ‘it-can-wait’ things, and even if included at the lowest resolution, video calls over the network would kill the network itself.

I welcome matte black with open arms. It’ll match my longed for ’69 Dodge Charger. Now I have another excuse to buy one. Charger, that is.
