Actually.. Steve's memo does NOT say that this is the reason he isn't giving the keynote. In fact, I'd say it's carefully worded to make you jump to that conclusion, but deliberately avoids stating it as fact.

So... Mike, you WERE right. Jobs for Obama CTO!! :-)

And something I forgot to add. Jobs is property to himself, and to no Apple fan, community et cetera. If he decides to stop, I see no excuse for us to act like that and demand his return or in this case reaching the point of publishing private information. I am disappointed as much as you are, but I think the Mac community should stand up to it's level and retain composure.

Mike, I certainly don't agree with your comments regarding Jobs privacy. Health, family and other maters of similar nature are strictly private and intimate, even if you are a celeb-CEO, or a star, starlet et cetera. In consequence considering private information as an essential part of a public announcement is unacceptable.

I think Jobs anger is driven by the fact that he has to account for every movement he makes, "Jobs veered left! Is he sick? Is Apple dying" and that sort of media extravaganza. However, it would be nice of Jobs to make a public announcement beforehand as to why he won't be able to attend MacWorld and give an explanation on why Apple chooses to abandon a community that has been supportive through Apple's ups and downs. But he is in no way obliged to in my opinion.
