MacWorld 09 Predictions

January 3, 2009

welcome-to-the-endMacWorld is Tuesday. MacWorld is Jobless. MacWorld is up in the air. For the first time in a while, no one is really sure what is going to happen at this event. Sure there are some iLife 09 rumors, some Mac Mini whispers, but there really is no standout product we know about beforehand like in years past (iPhone, MacBook Air). This MacWorld is also going to tell us a lot about Steve’s health. If nothing revolutionary is announced then Steve is probably healthy, but if something momentous occurs, then it would lean towards Steve’s declining health. Nevertheless, this keynote is important in many ways, so without further ado, I give you Mac Soda’s MacWorld Predictions.

Almost Sure Bets

1. iLife 09 and iWork 09: 9 to 5 Mac has heard that iWork and iMovie are going to be web based. We have heard that iWork and iLife are all going to have full web-based applications… but not replacing the desktop apps. MobileMe users will be able to access all of their iLife and iWork apps from any computer in the world. On top of this, we’ve heard that some of these apps are going to have an iPhone component to them, notably iWork and iPhoto. The apps will go on sale immediately.

2. Mac Mini: Details are scarce, but we believe the mini will be one of two things. It obviously will have updated graphics, displayport, bigger hard drive, faster processor, yadayadayada. The design however could either be carved out of a brick of aluminum, or could return to the plastic look of the G4 Cube.

3. Cinema Displays: 20 inch and 30 inch models to join the new 24 inch one.

4. iMac: The chin will die on Tuesday. This is our guess (keyword: guess).

5. iPhone 2.3: We’ve heard unconfirmed rumblings that new features will hit the iPhone at MacWorld this year, including Copy/Paste, Email Search, and Push Notification. Support for the new iLife/iWork offerings will be added as well.

6. New Server Device: Some sort of a home server, like a time capsule, but with more media capabilities and more space.

7. Snow Leopard: There will be talk about Snow Leopard, no doubt about it.

8. MacBook Pro (Silver Zinc): See here.

Less Likely, But Still Very Possible

1. iPhone Nano: Case Manufacturers have been shouting this one from a mountaintop. While the concept of this product baffles me, especially considering the iPhone is 199, I’m sure Apple will make it appealing in some way.

2. iPhone: New Colors? More Storage? MacWorld could easily be a launching pad for an updated iPhone 3G.

3. Apple TV: See here. I would sure love this to come.

4. New CEO: Phil Schiller could take the stage, discuss Steve’s health, and announce that he is the new CEO of Apple. Steve could possibly make a guest appearance and announce he is Obama’s Chief Technology Advisor.

5. iTablet/NetBook: See Here.

Is there anything I missed that should be added to this list? Let me know in the comments.

Why is the foot base of the 24″ Cinema Display slanted?
Hopefully for the new Mac Mini to easily slide onto.
