I believe that the reason we saw a new 24" display and not a 20" or 30" is that the 24 comes from the same source as the display for the 24" iMac and this only increases the number of displays from them, even if the current iMac display panel does not have the same environmental or performance specs, wait until just before Christmas to see the 24" iMac get an update. I also see the new display as part of a system plan for the Mac Mini, a beefed up mini with this display fills a space between the iMac and the Pro.

The issues are detailed more in this Appleinsider article. However, it makes no sense that they are citing optical drive problems. What could be wrong with the drive on the 17" MBP that's right on the 15" MBP. Logic says they'll use the same drive and Jobs made it clear Blu-Ray isn't really in the immediate picture so it couldn't be complications from that. There also seems to be a display issue as well. Again, I couldn't imagine the additional size of the screen would cause such a significant delay. Actually, I should probably not speculate since I'm an economist and not an engineer. God knows we have our own mess to deal with right now ....

Once again, the lack of firewire on the MacBook is a sale-killer for every high school student who wants to use their parent's DV camera to make videos.

It is a sale-killer for 99% of Mac or Windows-based video makers who wanted a new MacBook. Even the most modern Hi Def video cameras are only able to transfer their digital video to computer for editing through firewire.

The video cameras that do use USB for transfer are about 1% of the market, and most of those have not yet settled on a codec that can be edited by major editiing software like iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Premier etc etc.

Don't believe me? Go borrow (or buy but make sure you can return it) a flash-based video camera, take it to the Apple Store and ask them to download it into FCP or iMovie and edit it.

Go ahead.... try it! They can't do it without an intermediate step that involves proprietary camera software - and then you'll find out about dropped frames and lack of sound synchronization! It is a nightmare.

That is with flash & hard-drive based video cameras.

That is why we needed firewire on the MacBook and why it is a deal-killer for millions of potential customers.

I was looking to update my macbook ( got it in June 2006). Instead, I'm just disappointed in the prices. I may upgrade next year instead when they hopefully release an update on these bad-boys, and of course--the edu discount.
