Boom! (Updated Like Crazy)
October 14, 2008
This is Mac Soda’s crazy, random, and out of control live blog. We will be posting updates until the keynote, so keep clicking refresh: because a lot is going on!
What do you guys think? Is this the real deal? Of note, there’s no button on the trackpad (but it doesn’t appear to be glass), there’s a magnetic latch, the black chiclet keyboard is there, and the screen resembles that of the iMac.
Via Engadget.
UPDATE:
This is it. Engadget updates it with another pic from their source. They also claim that the MacBooks will have not one, but two nVIDIA chips inside the MacBooks. Nice to hear further confirmation of our story!
UPDATE 2:
Upon further inspection, it appears that the left side of the box has a slightly modified iLife logo (below is iLife 08). Compare and contrast, and draw your conclusions.
UPDATE 3:
Uh… say what?
Our source just hit us again to say that it’s two full-on NVIDIA GPUs — wild. Wilder still, they say the MacBook and 17-inch MacBook Pro aren’t getting refreshed tomorrow, which we find hard to believe, but we’ll see when we see.
That casts a lot of doubt as to the authenticity of the pics. Tomorrow is going to be very interesting…
UPDATE 4:
Arnold Kim, of Macrumors, believes its real. Via Macrumors…
“I’m pretty confident this is real.
arn”
This story just keeps getting better and better…
UPDATE 5:
Gizmodo posted the same story as Engadget, but with their watermark. This makes it less likely that Engadget got it from their source, and much more likely that a fanboy who is amazing at Photoshop sent the image he made to all the gadget sites in order to get his 15 minutes of iFame.
UPDATE 6:
We’ve think they’re real.
UPDATE 7:
We think they’re fake. Zoom in to the pictures and you can see some obvious brushing and see through effects.
UPDATE 8:
They’re fake everyone! JR, the man behind these pictures, had another “leak” not too long ago… and we all know how that turned out!
FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, FAKE, FAKE!
Go yell it from a mountaintop!
UPDATE 9:
Stop yelling. We’ve heard they’re real from a familiar, and reliable source (yes, Arn). We are not sure what to make of it though… they seem extremely fake, and the proof is in the pudding (see pictures).
I guess there’s not much to do but wait.
UPDATE 10:
Am I crazy?!? These have to be fake!!! Arn must be wrong! No MacBook or MacBook Pro 17 inch update tomorrow?!? What?!? But it’s Arn!!! Arn is always right! He’s a Macrumors God for crying out loud!!! GAHHHHH!!!!!!
UPDATE 11:
If Arn is right, at least it means that iLife 09 is coming! The side of the box, upon zooming in, isn’t the same logo as it is now: a giant, lower case “i” lies where the words “iLife 08″ used to be.
From Mac Soda, to Engadget, to Macrumors, to 9 to 5 Mac, to Apple Insider, to Gizmodo, to Daring Fireball… someone will be wrong, and someone will be right. Only half a day until we find out who.
UPDATE 12:
Maybe not… it isn’t all that legible.
UPDATE 13:
Might we see a new Cinema Display and a price raise on the MacBook? AI thinks so…
UPDATE 14:
Apple Insider slips in this little tidbit at the end of their story…
A new 17-inch MacBook Pro is unlikely to surface tomorrow, a bumped MacBook Air may not be immediately available for purchase, and that Blu-ray drives may not happen.
If that isn’t the most depressing thing I’ve ever read, I don’t know what is. I want a 17 inch MacBook Pro so bad with Blu-Ray, its not even funny. Let’s pray this is untrue.
UPDATE 15:
But I would like a 30 inch Cinema Display!
UPDATE 16:
But a price raise on the new MacBooks? With the economy the way it is? That seems crazy to me. And it sure goes against what we’ve heard…
UPDATE 17:
Maybe the 899 Display is an Apple branded HDTV?!?
UPDATE 18:
Or maybe I’m not thinking straight, and need to go to sleep…
UPDATE 19:
All I have to say is if Apple updates the Displays and people complain, I will be in awe.
UPDATE 20:
A lot has happened tonight.
We lost: MacBook Update, MacBook Pro 17 inch Update, MacBook Air Update (immediately)
We gained: 24 inch Cinema Display
Yippee!
UPDATE 21:
Yippee is sarcastic.
UPDATE 22:
Glass screen? I’m sure Apple’s going to have a blast repairing these…
UPDATE 23:
Update 22 was sarcastic as well.
UPDATE 24:
Does this look like a single piece of aluminum to you?
UPDATE 25:
Let’s take our guesses… will Steve say the word “Brick” in the keynote tomorrow?
I say yes.
UPDATE 26:
This is an insane night of rumors. I’m starting to crash… can’t handle all this information!
UPDATE 27:
11 hours, 49 minutes until Apple’s Notebook Media Event. Thank you Macrumors for not making me create a new countdown widget.
UPDATE 28:
If I make it to 100 updates, Steve Jobs will personally send me a new MBP 17″ with Blu-Ray.
Bryan, you have just costed me some serious sleep tonight.
UPDATE 29:
MacBook Bingo: http://gizmodo.com/5062956/new-macbook-2008-event-bingo-play-and-win-free-pizza
I’m so gonna do this. But it seems like there will not be a bingo, judging by the card.
UPDATE 30:
Come to think of it, has anyone ever won iBingo?
UPDATE 31:
I just received an image of the new Cinema Display!
UPDATE 32:
Turns out its a mockup. Shoot.
UPDATE 33:
I bet it will look something like this though.
UPDATE 34:
If it comes.
UPDATE 35:
Which I hope it doesn’t.
UPDATE 36:
Because I want a 17 inch MBP with Blu-Ray.
UPDATE 37:
But I know it will… because Arn says so.
UPDATE 38:
Arn just told me that he doubts they will discontinue the Cinema Displays, and that it seems like they will have something to say about it. Yippee!
UPDATE 39:
Yippee was not sarcastic.
UPDATE 40:
Indeed Brian, indeed. This is better than iBingo.
UPDATE 41:
That’s not the startup video, its the flash…
Isn’t it?
UPDATE 42:
I’m exhausted, I should go to bed…
UPDATE 43:
But wait! A friend of mine pointed out that the power button is nowhere to be seen on the mockup!
VICTORY!
- Johnny Drama
UPDATE 44:
Some of you got that…
UPDATE 45:
I think you’re right Kevin… that is the startup video!
I think…
UPDATE 46:
Am I distracting you Alex?
UPDATE 47:
um…the EXIF data of the images shows its been photoshopped
- Braden
Yet more confirmation that these are fake.
UPDATE 48:
Then why is Arn so sure they’re right?
UPDATE 49:
And why are Engadget, Gizmodo, and Apple Insider so sure about it as well?
UPDATE 50:
And why am I still blogging?!?
UPDATE 51:
Halfway from getting my new 17 inch Blu-Ray MacBook Pro.
UPDATE 52:
Mighty Arn has spoken…
Update: It should be noted that the $1299 presumed MacBook price point is labeled “Better” so it represents the mid range price for the MacBook. We still don’t know what the entry level MacBook price will be.
UPDATE 53:
Perhaps my source was right after all.
UPDATE 54:
I’m sure that update will result in me getting flamed by unnecessarily angry commenters saying “WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!? YOU DON’T HAVE A SOURCE! I HATE MAC SODA!!!!!”
UPDATE 55:
I knew someone would post that…
UPDATE 56:
It appears Kevin, Bryan, and Braden are enjoying the live blogging.
That’s good… because I’m not!
UPDATE 57:
Sorry if I sounded grumpy… I’m very tired!
UPDATE 58:
You guys are all right! JR’s mockup is FAKE!
UPDATE 59:
But is it?
UPDATE 60:
Here’s an idea! Let’s all sleep until 1:00 tomorrow, and then wake up, and find out officially what is coming!
UPDATE 61:
No Bryan! I MUST get 100 updates!!!!
UPDATE 62:
Thanks Robert! Lets hope I’m not way off (which at this rate, wouldn’t be too far fetched).
UPDATE 63:
Papi, I wrote an email to Steve Jobs asking him for this. You can read it below.
Mr. Jobs,
As a member of the online Apple community, I get excited for Apple’s events. I read the liveblogs that a few sites around the internet post when the event starts, and I watch the keynotes after. However, I have been baffled by a few oversights, and wanted to hear the reasons behind them from the man in charge.
First of all, when you stage small invite-only events at Apple’s campus or Town Hall, such as the one this Tuesday for the MacBooks, I notice that invites don’t get extended to some of the biggest sites on the internet. For example, Mac Rumors, a website that reports news on everything Apple-related, has not been asked to any of these events. Their live-blogging, Macrumors Live, reaches over a million people per event. That is a large group of people that shouldn’t be ignored. I believe that they should be offered an invite to these events. There are also several smaller Apple websites on the internet, and although they may not be as big as Macrumors, they still get tens to hundreds of thousands viewers who come to their site for news. These sites, such as 9 to 5 Mac, TUAW, and Mac Soda, should also be extended invitations, and if not for every event, at least for one or two events per year. These websites reach a large number of people: the people who care the most about Apple, and should be given the opportunity to support the company’s new products.
Also, I think it would be of great interest to the entire community if you offered a live video stream of the events. While the liveblogs are great, nothing beats watching you introduce the products yourself, and I know it would be greatly appreciated if you offered this. Apple had offered this in the past, but stopped doing it recently, and I think it would be great if you brought it back.
Thanks,
Jack
And to answer your question, no.
UPDATE 64:
So many comments… I really need to start a forum!
UPDATE 65:
By the way, this is an informal announcement, but by years end, Mac Soda is going to receive a redesign. It will be chic, sleek, and sodatastic!
UPDATE 66:
If anyone knows of a place to watch the keynote live, TELL ME!
UPDATE 67:
This is good enough for now
UPDATE 68:
Sodatastic. Learn it. Live it. Love it. Spread it. Maybe we can make this popular!
UPDATE 69:
Or not.
UPDATE 70:
By the way, I noticed no one got the Johnny Drama joke..
UPDATE 71:
I posted my event predictions, however they got slammed by so many people they were brushed aside as “airy, meaningless, speculation”.
You can still read them if you want. Today’s news may go against it, but that’s what I’ve heard.
UPDATE 72:
Best Buy is down!
UPDATE 73:
Priceless reaction from Gizmodo editor…
ok
UPDATE 74:
I must go to bed. I will continue in the morning.
Good Night, Sleep Tight, Dream of MacBooks, and don’t let Apple Insider’s negativity ruin your evening… even if they’re right.
UPDATE 75:
UPDATE 76:
I appears Mommy just told all the kids what she got them for Christmas… and they didn’t get the toys they wanted.
I want a 17 inch MBP!!!!
UPDATE 77:
The post-keynote liveblog is now over. It looks like I’m not going to get a 17 inch MBP with Blu-Ray.
Join Mac Soda at 12:30 PM EST, or 9:30 PST for our Keynote Liveblog!

October 14, 2008 at 3:26 am
Aaaaand..that trackpad is not glass. I thought you “confirmed” that?
October 14, 2008 at 3:49 am
the casing looks nothing like the pictures leaked a couple days ago…who has the real image?
October 14, 2008 at 3:57 am
what about the macbooks?
have you heard anything about them?
October 14, 2008 at 4:06 am
glad we got that figured out.
October 14, 2008 at 4:18 am
i really like all the updates there freaking hilarious
October 14, 2008 at 4:18 am
Arnold Kim (macrumors) is a freaking jack ass. I love macrumors.com but he is running it like a socialist. If you say anything at all that is SLIGHTLY possibly indicating something you don’t like about macrumors or that you disagree with him, he bans your freakin acount and never lets you post again. Ever. I corrected him on something in a very kind way about a month ago and he banned my account and then letter sent out a post saying the exact thing my reply to him was. Gah I hate how he runs that sight. And again, I called one guy an idiot (big whoop) cause he made a stupid comment and he banned the second account I made…for forever…JACK ASS
October 14, 2008 at 4:19 am
lol I hope the new macbook doesn’t turn out to have the glossy screen.. the pic seems real tho. but JR is not trustworthy…
ROBDOB
October 14, 2008 at 4:22 am
Good news, these are sort of a disappointment I think. I want the glass track pad, or better yet how bout a dock where the trackpad is for an iPhone and iPod touch with internet tethering capability. WOuldn’t that be sweet…
October 14, 2008 at 4:29 am
If these are real, we will be in for a disappointing keynote, and a giant nose dive in Apple’s stock.
October 14, 2008 at 4:36 am
Wow… have you guys been to AI’s sight lately. Looks like they WON’T DROP the price of the lowest line macbook, they will RAISE it….
October 14, 2008 at 4:52 am
So depressing! i like this site though, pretty funny updates. Back to the real world and studying!
October 14, 2008 at 4:55 am
I enjoy the excessive updates… it’s like your stream of conscience… but in update form.
October 14, 2008 at 4:59 am
What about the Macbook shells that we saw, remember the pics with the ugly hand guy, one of those cases was for a macbook body and another for a macbook pro body right? so we saw the macbook pro and the macbook still to come later today?
October 14, 2008 at 5:15 am
More updates! I’m enjoying the excessiveness of the updates. I hear Steve Jobs will personally send you a new MBP 17″ with Blu-Ray if you make it too 100 updates…
October 14, 2008 at 5:15 am
It’s on!
October 14, 2008 at 5:16 am
And to answer Update 25, yes I think he’ll at least mention it.
October 14, 2008 at 5:23 am
http://edibleapple.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/jsegway.jpg
Better than iBingo.
October 14, 2008 at 5:26 am
Oh hey I just realized that that’s the startup video on the screen! I was too busy reading updates that I didn’t pay much attention to the actual pic … more updates!!
October 14, 2008 at 5:28 am
No I’m pretty sure that’s the video that plays with the cool music and goes through space and says Welcome in a bunch of languages when you start it up!
October 14, 2008 at 5:32 am
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5RjnkeznJE
I’d say just around 29 seconds or so … I mean check out the residual light specs all around the screen - flash wouldn’t do that, would it?
October 14, 2008 at 5:32 am
Holy crap Kevin is right. I thought it was some strange light because I think someone pointed out on Macrumors it was taken with an iPhone (hence no flash and blurriness). It had a geotag that pinpointed the location about 2 miles from Apple Headquarters. I think that is the start-up video.
I still think it’s fake though.
October 14, 2008 at 5:35 am
This is way too amusing, although its keeping me from finishing a program. Please continue with the updates, they are much more enjoyable than coding.
October 14, 2008 at 5:36 am
um…the EXIF data of the images shows its been photoshopped
October 14, 2008 at 5:39 am
Yeah a few people on Macrumors are saying it’s easy to fake the EXIF data if you’re a photoshop fiend.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=6405805&highlight=EXIF#post6405805
October 14, 2008 at 5:41 am
If its fake then why did they forget to edit out the photoshop tag in the EXIF data while they were faking the geotag?
If its real then why would it say photoshop in the first place?
Doesn’t add up to me.
October 14, 2008 at 5:44 am
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!? YOU DON’T HAVE A SOURCE! I HATE MAC SODA!!!!!
October 14, 2008 at 5:44 am
Just kidding…
October 14, 2008 at 5:44 am
My refresh button is so pissed right now.
October 14, 2008 at 5:46 am
JR might have used photoshop not to show something that will surprise us tomorrow(or this afternoon). idk what that will be, but since i also think that photo is real, there will be something else than those ports on the side of Pro.
October 14, 2008 at 5:46 am
EXIF data is great, but as for these pictures being real I think the design is a step down for apple. This is the most worthwhile distraction I’ve run into all night.
October 14, 2008 at 5:47 am
Judging from JR’s past I would guess that this is a (very good) mockup…that is similar to the final product, but not an actual image of the final product.
October 14, 2008 at 5:48 am
Good point, seeing as how he was spot on with the newest Nano.
October 14, 2008 at 5:48 am
exactly, it was pretty close, just off on a couple details.
October 14, 2008 at 5:49 am
Haha as awesome as it’d be to see you get to 100 updates, please don’t feel obligated to!
October 14, 2008 at 5:49 am
Yeah I have 2 research papers due that I haven’t started yet. If anyone knows anything about the history of the DOW and can correlate it with interest rates, I’d really appreciate a 10-15 page report ASAP. Thanks.
Happy blogging, good luck with the 100 updates.
October 14, 2008 at 5:49 am
yeah i don’t think it is a real-real, but a mockup that looks EXACTLY the same as the real product.
October 14, 2008 at 5:50 am
I trust you more then the other sites now to be honest. Those pictures are clearly fake, yet they are accepted by the Big sites. You have been right about everything. In fact you were so right you were two days early. I hope your list of stuff is the stuff that goes on the mac. I have enjoyed your site and feel that it has a lot of potential.
October 14, 2008 at 5:51 am
is there anyways we can watch the notebook event live or somthing??..
October 14, 2008 at 5:51 am
Make sure your paper ends with all in all the DOW is in the crapper and won’t be slithering out anytime soon.
October 14, 2008 at 5:52 am
Meh, as nice of a concept as it looks to me, I think about 90% of Pro users would sh*t bricks (pun intended) if the MBP was only glossy. I hope they still offer matte for those that want it, especially on the MBP.
October 14, 2008 at 5:52 am
Also…i cannot comprehend them updating the 15-inch MBP whilst leaving the MB and 17in. MBP as-is. This would be really, really bad. We’d have a Macbook, A Macbook Air, an oldMacbook Pro, and a Macbook Pro
….too complex
October 14, 2008 at 5:52 am
Are you eastern time as well?
October 14, 2008 at 5:53 am
hay guys.. is there anyways we can watch the notebook event live or somthing??..
October 14, 2008 at 5:54 am
There will be a ton of live blogs like this one for sure, but I dunno about a video feed.
October 14, 2008 at 5:54 am
Im central.
October 14, 2008 at 5:54 am
I know that Engadget will be covering the event live on their website.
October 14, 2008 at 5:54 am
ahhh man i wish i could see it go down live!! i aint slept for 2days thinking boutthis event hahaha.. yaaaaaaay
October 14, 2008 at 5:55 am
Me either Braden, it just doesn’t make sense. I think the JR MBP is fake, the MB and MBP will be updated (didn’t the Apple Manual leak prove that?), and anything other than that who knows. But those two things I’m fairly certain of.
October 14, 2008 at 5:57 am
Is it possible that in the second picture on the side of the box that there are mutliple colored macbooks?
October 14, 2008 at 5:57 am
We could start an AIM chat in the mean-time, just to pass time/have fun/speculate. I think that’d be easier than implementing a forum (for the short term).
October 14, 2008 at 5:58 am
“At year’s end,
The spotlight turns to MacSoda.
Plague-like rumors to follow immediately.”
October 14, 2008 at 5:58 am
Sodatastic…really? That sounds amazi..—-That sounds Sodatastic!
October 14, 2008 at 6:01 am
The Following assumes the pics are real, which i dont believe:
That magsafe cord “brick” in image 1 looks….bigger…”brick” anyone?
October 14, 2008 at 6:02 am
So what do all of you except to see at the event?
October 14, 2008 at 6:04 am
I like how the number of comments is slowly catching up to the number of updates.
Also, THE BEST BUY STORE IS DOWN! Just doesn’t have the same ring to it…
http://www.bestbuy.com/ Seriously though, interesting timing. Probably unrelated
October 14, 2008 at 6:05 am
I expect:
Updated Macbook/MacbookPro (same design, none of that AL/Plastic stuff) made out of a aluminum.
Possible update to air.
Possible netbook. (brick?)
Blu-Ray in at least the top end MBP.
October 14, 2008 at 6:07 am
Oh and…if my dreams come true?
MaChromatic macbooks/airs to match the new nanos!
October 14, 2008 at 6:08 am
I’m still skeptical about Blu-ray after they got rid of the optical drive for the MBA and are focusing on iTunes store downloads.
October 14, 2008 at 6:10 am
Oh, just shy of the 100 mark. zzz …
October 14, 2008 at 6:13 am
I’m still very impressed! I’ll be sure to come back in the morning and check this page out.
Since you got to 74 (at least tonight) I’m sure Steve Jobs could send you a 15.4″ MBP as consolation. Blu-Ray questionable.
October 14, 2008 at 6:13 am
thank you mac soda update thing man lol.. im hearing it myt show up on this..
http://skemez1.posterous.com/live-video-and-audio-for-apple
October 14, 2008 at 7:37 am
Dudes. The photoshopping on the above pic is an actual photoshop job. Its not fake, just hiding something. I have a sneaking suspicion that they have covered up the docking port (ie all of the ports on one side, including the docking port, covered, and the disk drive on the other for access when it is inside the dock, probably the 899 accessory K29). We’ll soon see. Check out the earlier pic of the frame (with the red foam to see the tape-over port I’m talking about). Here’s to hoping.
October 14, 2008 at 7:39 am
Hoping and Blu-ray drives that is, you morons in Cupertino.
October 14, 2008 at 7:40 am
What I hope doesn’t get lost in the shuffle is the new processors from the Centrino 2 family. Especially the P series with a reduced 25W thermal output. Could mean lower temperatures and longer battery life!
October 14, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Can’t wait until the keynote, only about 5 hours left!
October 14, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Bottom of the case revealed,
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/10/14/bottom_of_macbook_pro_revealed_more_last_minute_specs_pricing.html
October 14, 2008 at 2:05 pm
I know… I’m gonna post all this stuff at 12:30 EST.
October 14, 2008 at 2:11 pm
My hopes are definitely lower today than they were a couple days ago.
