2.1 “Surprise Features”
September 8, 2008
Ars Technica believes that the 2.1 Firmware, slated to be released on Tuesday, is going to ship with some secret features that weren’t included in the developer’s edition. Here are my predictions as to what they are.
- Push Notification: Obvious, but it was removed from the latest versions. This will be included for sure.
- GPS Navigation: I believe Apple created a turn-by-turn navigation app for the iPhone that will ship with 2.1. Perhaps it will arrive integrated with Google Maps, perhaps it will be a standalone program.
- Copy and Paste: You ask, and you shall receive. They said they have a list of commonly requested features, and when an item gets to the top of the list, they address it. Believe me, this is the top of the list! This also may be why they stopped the open source group from trying to add this functionality.
- MMS: Possible for the same reasons as copy and paste. I would like to see it, but who knows.
- iTunes Music Store: Expect to here that the Wi-Fi Store is now available over 3G as well. I’m sure by now Apple has worked something out with the record companies.
- Bugs: From the Apple Screen of Death, to the 3rd Party apps crashing, to the removal of all DRMed content, Apple should have finally ironed out all the issues for this release.
There’s my list… if you have any suggestions, add them to the comments, and I’ll post them if they’re good.
Second Garmin unit. Perfect for the middle east because all the maps are the latest and the POI database is second to none.
