Why Fake Steve Really Quit

September 1, 2008

I was an avid reader of Fake Steve Jobs: until Dan Lyons canceled it abruptly. He shortly started a new site, called “Real Dan Lyons”, and while its a good Mac blog, it just leaves me wishing he was still doing Fake Steve posts. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to read Fake Steve’s perspective on issues such as the multicolored iPod rumor, the Seinfeld ad campaign, but haven’t been able too.

When I saw Bloomberg posted Steve’s obituary, it was the last straw. I needed to know why Dan Lyons quit Fake Steve, and while I assumed it was for his name to get out there more, I needed to hear it from him.

It turns out, that wasn’t the reason at all. According to the email he sent me, it was for a completely different reason.

“I was worried about Steve jobs’s health and felt uneasy parodying a sick person”

I thought he was joking, because it seemed like a strange reason to quit (especially because he’s not), so I asked if that was the real reason.

“Yes I’m not a total (expletive)”

So there you have it… Dan Lyons quit Fake Steve because he felt guilty parodying a dying man: even though he isn’t actually dying. (UPDATE: Or is he?)

UPDATED: Wow, I didn’t realize everyone already knew this. The doctor (Dr. Macenstein that is) informed me I had a chronic case of old news. I apologize for the old story.
